playing with it ...

Physics is a fascinating topic, and this book about the safe breaking, practical joker and  maverick physicist Richard Feynman is my coffee-time read at the moment.

If you are ever despondent about where your art is heading, have a read of this. In the book he was talking about physics, but here I've substituted the word ART.

"Then I had another thought: Art disgusts me a little bit now, but I used to enjoy doing art. Why did I enjoy it? I used to play with it. I used to do whatever I felt like doing - it didn't have to do with whether it was important for the development of art, but whether it was interesting or amusing for me to play with. When I was in high school, I'd see water running out of a faucet growing narrower, and wonder if I could figure out what determines that curve. I found it was rather easy to do it.  I didn't have to do it; It wasn't important for the future of art; somebody else had already done it. That didn't make any difference: I'd invent things and play with things for my own entertainment.

I like to play with it too !!

I'm really pleased to feature on the promo material. This is the latest Open Exhibition at Batley Art Gallery - launching this Friday, 15th September, the Open is a selected exhibition of paintings, sculpture and photography by professional and amateur artists. Feel free to join us at the preview from 6pm to 8pm - all welcome! Three of mine are on display ...

Dear Ian

Thank you for submitting work for this year’s open exhibition at Batley Library & Art Gallery. We had over 150 pieces submitted, and unfortunately have been unable to include all of the work in the show. We hope that you will not be too disappointed if your work has not been included, and will consider entering work for our next open exhibition. The selection is not simply reflective of the quality of individual artworks, but of how they work together and enable us to create a coherent exhibition which makes a strong visual statement.

We will be holding a preview on Friday 15th September 2017, 6.00pm to 8.00pm. We hope that you will be able to come along and see the exhibition; refreshments will be provided. Please feel free to extend the invitation to friends, family and clients.

The following pieces were accepted for exhibition:

 Sun Veil and Mask
 Soup
 Collateral

Happy days !!

Once upon a time before the art, I was heavily into photography, and made a bit of a living photographing bands, always on the sly. I sneaked my camera into Leeds Polytechnic in 1976 where the Punk Package Tour had bravely been given the go ahead after being banned from venues across the country after guitarist Steve Jones swore in a televised interview with Bill Grundy. This was Dave Vanian of the Damned. It's sitting on my shelf waiting for a buyer. Maybe I should concentrate on these more. They would certainly be more interesting than my art - to the casual eye :)
